LAMP Gala Sneak Peek: Why We Honor Mark Crispin Miller
Mark Crispin Miller is a driving force in the world of media reform and media education. For one thing, he is a prolific author, with books from the 1980s and 1990s focusing on television and culture, along with several books since then about the role media play in elections, political campaigns and policy. He has been one of the most outspoken critics of the role of the press in election fraud, and today speaks out against the expansion of New York University–which happens to be his employer. He is a Professor of Media, Culture and Communication in NYU’s Steinhardt School of Culture, Education and Human Development. In addition to his teaching, research and writing, he also manages News from Underground, a daily e-news service highlighting must-read news stories and civic engagement for academics.
Mark is also concerned about media ownership, which is a major issue for The LAMP as well, because of the deleterious effect it has on freedom of speech, information availability and accessibility and the overall well-being of our democracy. Check out his fiery 2010 interview with RT America:
Join us on Monday when we celebrate Mark’s tireless courage, persistence and passion. The Amplifier Award is only a small token of thanks for all he has done to build a critical mass of media literate citizens.
